Guest Speaker David Richardson
The Slope Sea, Spawning Bluefin Tuna Research Scheduled for 2025
You are cordially invited to our annual Holiday Bash at Haddad Ocean Café that includes our friends from the Cape Cod Charter Boat Association and as we look forward to David Richardson’s presentation on “The Slope Sea, Spawning Bluefin Tuna Research Scheduled for 2025″.
David Richardson, Oceans and Climate Branch, NEFSC/NMFS/NOAA will discuss Atlantic bluefin tuna were historically thought to have only two spawning grounds, one in the Mediterranean Sea and the other in the Gulf of Mexico. About a decade ago, we presented clear evidence that bluefin tuna were also spawning in the Slope Sea, an area between the Gulf Stream and
the northeast United States Continental Shelf. In this talk, he will provide an update on recent bluefin tuna research, including evidence that spawning occurs over an even more widespread area of the Atlantic.
David will also discuss a number of planned projects for 2025. In June of 2025 we will undertake the first longline survey to the Slope Sea in over 50 years. We also plan to sample fish eggs and larvae in a previously unsampled area off the Carolinas to evaluate whether this area is an additional bluefin tuna spawning ground. Finally, a major sampling effort for larval bluefin tuna will occur in the Slope Sea in 2025.
These samples will be compared using genetic techniques to samples from the fishery and samples from other spawning grounds. The rates and patterns with which parent-offspring and sibling matches occur in these genetic comparisons will provide information on the size of the bluefin tuna population, the connections among spawning grounds, as well as many other important life history traits.
